Since the age of 6, Maria Bido acquired a taste for cooking traditional Puerto Rican dishes from her grandmother. By watching and helping her Wela (Grandmother) prepare dinners for the family Maria received a non-traditional hands-on Culinary training. As a Mother of four sons in the Lower East Side, Maria continued to cook these traditional dishes for her family and friends. As a result, Maria has become a Local Chef, opened her own business (Mía’s Cocína) vending food at festivals and catering in the Lower East Side.
Maria has partnered with Loisaida Inc and Essex Market to conduct La Cocina de Loisaida in person cooking classes. At the classes attendees prepare and eat a meal with Maria as she speaks about the history and the culture of the food being prepared.
